Founded "Smart Lunch" in 1932 as a restaurant, located in the Teramachi covered shopping arcade in downtown Kyoto (Kawaramachi/Sanjo intersection). The naming of "smart" , they meant "Attentive and thoughtful service." After WWⅡ, "Smart lunch" has been changed the name to "smart coffee shop". Now they still provide their own roasted coffee beans as when it was first established. Their philosophy is making special place to all customers who enjoy their coffee and also make them feel comfortable all the time.

The coffee shop is very popular and many people who work for movie industry in Kyoto (there is a place called Uzumasa. it is famous for movie production and shooting) often come here for their break.


They serve beautiful Hotcakes(Japanese pancake) and French toast along with speciality coffee. The hotcakes and French toast are homemade from original recipes. The French toast is done perfectly, with a crisp exterior giving way to a custardy, delicious interior. There are French toasts, ham and egg sandwiches or ham and toast as alternate options. In addition to coffee, there are a variety of fresh fruit juices including orange and peach. The décor is vintage with dark wooden tables and leather seats.
